RADIO ADDICTIONS ANNONYMOUS

Ok, I thought it would be neat to start a group for those of us who just can't seem to part with our radios. If you're like me, you see one you think would be cool to have; then, you may or may not use it. If you don't, it sits on the shelf, in a drawer, or the kitchen table and you think to yourself, "I bet that one will be cool in my truck!". So, let's hear it.....

Most of my collection centers around Maxtracs, UHF... I have 2 two channel models, and one 32 channel, all 40 w. One that was butchered.. errr modified by the local dealer to hook a zetron model 5 directly to the circuit board. I also have a motorola Micor VHF drawer unit, I might by a mate a try and build a chincy business or amateur repeater. My collection all depends on how much the local emergency services' want to deposit in the dumpster (or my waiting van in most cases).

Ok, so I admit it: I have a Motorola problem. I have a mint HT600 UHF with DMTF cover, 2 other genesis portables, 3 jedi portables, an A4 VHF Spectra, a lowband X9000 and 13 Syntor X's that I have no idea what the :o to do with! Oh, yeah and a Motrac control head....what the hell am I going to do with that???

I also have an VHF MX350 that is in a box....neat radio! I wish I could use it! It says MX350 on the front, and MX300-S on the top. Does this mean anything to the MX-saavy on this list? I'd love to put it back in service.

I have a Motrac trunk mounted mobile, and cable, and no control head. :)

I'd ask you for the control head (since it is a lot cheaper and easier then sending the boat anchor to you!), but the Motrac is beyond repair, as far as I'm concerned. It makes a nice door stop, though... but, man, it stinks to stub my toe on it! :o Ouch!

I had a Mocom 70 in operation with that head for a while, but I chucked the radio when I moved last year. Now it's a book end!

I like the older radios,
because they are very strong.

Unlike some new series,
which won't last half as long.

I have a collection of sabers,
each in different flavors.

now collecting spectras,
to put in to my van.

But I'd rather have a Harris,
AN/PRC 117F_HQ if i can.

Yes, I admit it's a sickness with which I too am afflicted. Four Genesis HTs, GM300, Syntor X on HB, Syntor X on LB, PT300 (waiting for the 10m conversion), HT200 (on 10m now - worked Texas with it the other day standing outside the front of the condo here in NJ), more MT500s than I can count. Two I use on 2m, two in absolutely gorgeous brand new shape filled with railroad crystals, and a bunch the kids use to play cops and robbers or fire chief. Oh and I can't forget the Spirits - discussed in another thread, fine radios that serve the purpose for which they were designed.

I would like a Motran. I've found over the years that Motracs tend to be beaten beyond being worth repair. I think too many folks were tempted to tinker with them being tubes were considered "easier" to play with back in the day. But, who has time and money for that stuff? I do not. Lots of things I'd like to try. Someday I'll get hold of the service manual for the PT300 (anyone????) and do the 10m conversion. (I actually saw the manual for the PT300 on ebay. It sold for $17, and ya know, I'd have bought it, but I was sick the night it ended - only a few months ago - and slept through it ending. Oh well.)

What else . . . hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Oh wait, we're supposed to be here for help, not to discuss MORE wishes. !!!!!!!

Thanks for letting me vent though. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

It's a sickness, started with mom driving a taxi when I was real little, and that big Mother M mic and the Motrac control head . . ..

Later, happy holidays to all!

I can quit any time I want to. Really, I can. Rather than fight the addiction, it's just easier to give in to it. I have:

VHF CDM1550
VHF A7 MT2000
UHF 32Ch Maxtrac
VHF A4 Dashmount Spectra
VHF A4 Dashmount Spectra converted to C9
Kenwood TMD700A
Yaesu VX5R

And I have five headless 402-430 A9 Spectras floating around if anyone wants them. I'm looking for lowband gear.. either Syntor X9000, 42-50 Maxtrac 16 pin or 35-50 Orion

AAHH... that feels better. Now I know I'm not alone. This is about the time when someone shouts out "Group HUG!!" It ain't gonna be me... I know this group too well.

My name is Bill, and I am a radio Addict.

Cheap Japanese amateur gear was the gateway drug, got me into the hobby. Then it was uniden scanners that fed the addiction.

Then came Motorola.
I am hooked on motorola now. Everything else seems inferior.
I might as well list what I have:

Motorolas:
1 UHF Maxtrac
1 VHF GM300
1 GP300 w/quick charger and speaker mic
1 European 5-tone GP300 w/british 220v quick charger (that big plug looks cool)
1 A4 VHF High-power spectra (just bought it)
and about 20 Maxar 80's (they were free, anyone want one?)

Non motorla:
2 BC-780 Scanners (nice radios)
1 Yaesu FT-847
1 Yaesu FT-2500
1 ICOM R-3
1 Alinco DJ-580 HT (with full 800mhz RX)
and a bunch of other parts and junk

Well, at least I don't play computer games much anymore, that was expensive, and much less productive. I am still in school full time, only work part time. The list will probably grow when I get a full-time job.

I could probably sell some of these radios, but as a friend of mine said "They don't eat anything." I'll sit down now, and let another member of the group speak.

Happy Holidays,
-Bill

I have worked on 98% of what's been listed here. I don't do radios as a hobby, though I'm sure it's interestng. As such, I don't feel I have a problem....other than maybe a career change is in order...

WOW !! When my wife says "why do you have all those radios around the house for?" I should show her your radio list, that will shut her up :):)

But seriously, if I were to own that many radios, I would probably have to write letters and send them to Batlabs in Canada, insted of going to the boards, because I would not be able to afford a computer:):):)

The biggest part of all the stuff resides inside two closets. On my desk is only the shortwave and allmode-stuff and some of the mobiles. Not to mention, that my shack is a "restricted area". So no problem with "DI VORCE"

I believe there was a similar thread on this topic some time ago, and the number of radios I have has not decreased since then only increased. 3 Crown Vic's with 3 Syntor X-9000 apiece in them or an Astro-Spectra on UHF in one. An Expedition with 2 110w Spectra secure. 6 System Sabers with DES-Otar. 2 Astro-Sabers with DES-xl. 12 Micor 250w UHF secure repeaters, 20 Spectra-Tac receivers scattered throughout 50 mi radius of N.Y.C. Thats just my toys. 150 MX VHF secure DES portables for my son's CAP unit. 25 or so UHF DES MX-S portables for my MP detachment, 2 VHF and 2 UHF MX series suitcase repeaters, converted to MX-S radios. Another dozen or so 110w UHF Maratracs, (tradeins from an old customer) A dozen VHF/UHF SyntorX mobiles, a few more Syntor X9000 mobiles not installed. 25 or so Maxtrac 32 chan 25w UHF mobiles, former N.Y.S.P. Thruway Division radios. A smatering of other brands of both mobiles and portables. 150 900mhz Spectra's and Maxtrac's(more tradeins). And so many parts it would take me a month just to inventory them, (I bought out a lot of radio shops as they went under because of NextHELL. I am still playing with some SyntorX HHCH radios for my sons car. And would you believe I have gotten out of the radio business. Oh what the hell. it's only radios.

1 lowband/UHF units on one control head equipped with 256 modes

One vehicle with:
1 VHF/UHF Spectra A9 on one control head

Service Monitors:
2 R2001D
1 R2600

Portables:

1 MT2000 VHF A7
1 MT2000 UHF A7

1 HT1550

1 UHF Visar
1 VHF Visar

1 MSF5000 UHF Repeater (digital)
4 MSF5000 RA stations (digital)

1 Syntor X equipped with Anaconda

3 MastrII stations on 6m

Manuals upon piles of manuals

Several loose Micor base stations on UHF, VHF and lowband as well as a tone remote controlled station on 10m with an original 110 watt continous duty PA.

Well, do I qualify as addicted?

My god man! you're way beyond help

What is anaconda? and how the hell did you get 1000 modes, is that a sum total or something?

Also, how did you do vhf and uhf on an A9 spectra? Is that done with the special Y cable and all the associated boxes etc. ?

1000 Modes?? HUH?!?! I thought my 128 modes were cool.

Anaconda is some federal thing if I remember right.

Hello.

All I really want is one of the new motorola radios that does bottom of HF to well into microwave, briefcase model.
The new VFO, TCXO units are really neat, I put one in a MT500 a few days ago, reprogrammable vintage radio is the best of both worlds.
The units work well in the HT220, I have been told, however I do not see how you would fit the thing in anything but the omni housing.
I have mostly "green" radios, military flavor beats vanilla any day.

For those of you who would like to know what Anaconda X is:

Anaconda X is specifically designed to allow an operator to use all features of the Syntor X, and to change
them as needed. Our Anaconda I provided this upgrade for the TXA and SRA Syntors, the original
synthesized Micor replacement from the early 1980's. Anaconda I is still shipping, although the Syntor
was never as popular for the Amateur market as the Syntor X is proving to be. Anaconda X's development
is now complete and ARW is purchasing inventory and component stock at this time.
Current status is that we're "Beta Test Ready", meaning we're ready to ship early production kits. If you
are interested, please let me know and I'll send you the longer paper mentioned above (it includes an order
form and instructions, as well as more detail on technical aspects). If you don't understand the terms of a
Beta Tester, drop a line and we can talk about it.
A short list of features of the Anaconda X:
*
Supports LB VHF, HB VHF and UHF Syntor X's
*
224 mode memories, arranged in 7 banks of 32 each
*
VFO scanning and stepping
*
Mode scanning and stepping
*
Global scanning
*
Complete implementation of the Syntor X's priority mode scanning, including dual priority, single
priority, non-priority modes.
*
16 character alphanumeric label for each channel
*
Programmable PL Tone
*
Talkback Scan On/Off
*
Extender On/Off (VHF LB only)

It is made by some ham radio dudes.

and here is the link directly to them.....

The anaconda part is already answered and quite well I might add. Was that you Matt?

As for the X9000 with 1000 modes, that is done by bank switching the EEPROM and the result is I have 4X255 mode banks. There are some limitations, such as no NP mode scan above 128 as the firmware was never developed to do so. So think of it as a 128 mode radio with extra channel storage. It comes in handy in areas that have 20 khz repeater spacing and I am from an area has 15 khz spacing.

The other limitation is the display names are good only to mode 210. I may have that one solved sometime soon IF I can get some time to sit down with the project.

AS for the Spectra, Yes, dual drawer does work, just like on the X9000. No connection boxes or anything. Just cables. I do prefer the X9000 even if I have to have extra boards for features. It's a superior radio to the Spectra and most everything else I have ever worked on.

addicted to Moto radios

I also have too many radios. From moto to Ge to green painted radios.
Top of the line to the old HT-220. All bands or like I say Dc to Daylight.
Its been fun reading all the list of collections. And I am still looking for new radios.
Another bad habit is test equipment. Service monitors try 3 of them. Just sold number 4 , the old R2000B. And all the equipment that is used to cal service monitors. HP this and that. I call it my wall of HP. About a 100K worth of gear. I can test any measurment out to 3Ghz. Most out to 18Ghz and some out to 26Ghz. And that is at the shop. More dups at home.

As to radios, I have a full collection of Downed airmen radios from WW2 to current issue, found that one at a junk yard with a fresh lot from Moto Gov section. The fun radios are the Military hoppers. One I have will hop at 3000 hops a minute. Have quick mode. Real cool with two of them in a closed loop test. Bad JU JU to run these on the air.

Back to the subject, I have TOO many radios.

But it is fun.

I am into older radios, and getting into newer ones:

2 VHF HT220's, one has selective call, one is on 165 GOV'T band
1 UHF HT220 on 444/446/449 HAM channels, doesn't transmit, still working on the darn thing
1 UHF MT500 on common UHF PS frequencies
1 VHF MX340 on 158.295, single channel
1 Minitor I, 155.3100
1 UHF Mostar, 2 channel, also on UHF PS frequencies, will be used as a base

That's about it!!! :D

Hey, Microwave Mike...only three service monitors? Well, unlike spouses, there's no law that says you have to be monogamous with test equipment. Did you see that a late model IFR1900 went for $3000 on ebay recently:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... gory=25418

Wow - what a box - man, I was tempted, but I'm saving up for something else at the moment.

Say, wouldn't you like to have a service monitor that goes above a gig? Do 1296 and 2.4 gig ham bands, check harmonics of 800/900 stuff, check out interference from PCS, do path evaluations of 2.4 gig wireless widgets? The new IFR2975 goes to 2.7 gigs. I tested one against the R2670. The 2670 is nice but for a test equipment junkie, the 2975 is way cooler. We are getting one at work. I would love to have one at home too, but the tab is a little too high for my personal collection (unless Wowbagger wants to make me a real deal!)

Here is an alternative. Look at the Anritsu MT8801B. This box is marketed with software packages for testing cellular and PCS phones. There are similar products from HP and R&S, but when you look at their specs you find out that the RF part of the box only covers the cellular and PCS freqs. Unlike them, the Anritsu covers the complete spectrum from 300 KHz to 3 GHz. A sort of well kept secret.

The call the unit a "Radio Communications Analyzer". To me that says: 'service monitor'. The secret is to be sure you get the right options. Option 1 is analog measurement which gives you all the standard frequency error, modulation and SINAD measurements and appropriate signal generation ability. Option 7 gets you a fully functional spectrum analyzer that is better than the spectrum analyzer function in any other service monitor that I have seen.

These started showing up used a year or so ago, probably casualties of the tech downturn. I got one for $3000. Recently they have gone a little higher - the secret of their abilities may be out. Still worth it considering that the new price two years ago could have been as high as $68,000.00 depending on options.

Just think of this as a little 'help' from one junkie to another.
