I have this HT1000 model H01RDC9AA3CN with a problem. When I transmit a carrier and monitor my signal on another radio, I hear a crackle, kinda like a geiger counter like sound, on the receiving radio. I have removed the front case from the "bad" radio and detached the flex cable and if I transmit the noise is gone.

So I thought it was the flex. I swapped the front of the "bad" radio with the front of another radio that was working and with the "good" front attached I still get the strange noise. Aside from the noise, the audio sound fine. Transmit output may also be a bit low too. I'm stumped any ideas?

What is the manuf. date of the radio (or the first 5 digits of the S#) ? There was a repair
note out on certain UHF Jedi models for the noise you describe caused by poor grounding of the boards to frame. The cure is a Jedi microphonics kit or one of the other
forum members might have a workaround instead of purchasing the kit .
I've seen the kits on EBay at around $50.

I had that kinda problem with my MTX838 UHF... sounded like a light wind blowing into the mic when transmitting.. What I did was take the front off, gently pull the mic out and give it a good "blow" Sometimes there is dust that gets in there... It worked for me.

The antenna connector in the frame works loose due to persons, no names!!, handeling the radio by the antenna. This results in poor contact to the antenna connector from the spring contact on the RF board. Sometimes the contact gets badly pitted from the RF "jumping" the poor contact. I have made up a special jig to press in the connector.

For the experianced technician::
Disassemble the radio from the housing, and remove the shield and boards. Clean the contacts with a pencil eraser, and also the contact points from the RF board to the frame, then reassemble RF board and controller into frame. Make sure the shield makes contact all the way arround the frame.

I had a tech tell me that the MT1000 had the same sort of problem. As he explained it, there is a small "tit" on the inside of the radio where the antenna contector is which will break/get loose and will cause that exact problem. He said you could always tell if you wiggle the antenna while xmiting.

I would think a thorough cleaning and check of the antenna connector would solve the problem. Do you notice when you transmit if the LED flashes at all? If it does not flash, then I would think your antenna connection is the culprit. If it is not a steady light when flashing, then your internal contacts on the radio need some cleaning or your have some other sort of problem. I'm sure you already tried this, but are you sure you have a fresh/good battery on the transmitting radio. A poor battery can do the same thing, but you would probably see the disruption in the LED and also loss of incoming signal for extended conversations.

PJ, there is a simmular problem in the Gemini radio, MT1000/HT600 but takes a skilled tech to repair the strap from the base of the antenna mount. This IS a very common problem on these radios. I do fix them too for BB members. So does Monty.

I realize I'm resurrecting a VERY dead thread, but which strap is the culprit? I see a couple different contacts at the base of the antenna connection. Depending on what we're talking about, I might be up to doing the fix myself. My HT1000 is also a 402AWU serial number. I wonder if age has anything to do with it, or if it's a defect of a particular production run?

Edit: Nevermind, I did some more searching, and answered my own question. Problem fixed.

Your problem is most likely poor grounds. Squeeze the radio while you are transmitting and listening to the signal. Flex it, twist it.... not a pretty sound is it?

Open the radio up and reflow the shield grounds.

No, it wasn't a pretty sound. In fact, it's downright annoying.

I did some more searching last night, and found the same answer to my question. Whipped out the ol' soldering iron, and all is well now.

Another thing to keep in mind with the noisey UHF Jedi's is to make sure that the chasis shield is tight on the board. The shield itself when it becomes worn down will actually make intermittent contact and cause a popping sound especially while running or walking around with the radio. The old style chasis shields could simply be "remolded" to create a tighter seal. However the newer seperate clip types should already seat well but the contact points get bent and need to be straightened. Another note, unless they've been removed the RF board has about 4 little butterfly clips on the shields that can be bent up a little to assist in better grounding.
