Ok im stuck, How in the @#*! do I get the alpha tags instead of the channel numbers. I have always been able to understand all radios I have dealt with except the Alpha on this one. It is a Vertex VX3000 VHF 48channels. Thanks for any help given, Donnie G.

You can stop racking your brain with that radio. The Vertex VX-3000 mobile radio does not do alpha tags. It only displays numbers.

I had a UHF model and sold it for that very reason.

It shows the alpha tag screen in the software but it won't work. I don't know why Vertex made that radio like that. It was the biggest disapointment that I had with that radio.

I sold the radio about 2 months later. Then came the VX-4000, Never been happier!

First, it must be enabled to allow the user to make such changes - don't remember seeing this option in the software, but each of the VX-3000's I've seen has had alpha displays.

From their ad slick
"8 Character Alphanumeric Display (48ch & 120ch version)"

Paraphrased from the manual "How to Change the Alpha-Numeric "tag" Display

1 Press and hold the SCAN button and turn on the radio, release the SCAN button.

2 Press the UP or DOWN button to choose the channel you want changed.

3 Press the A button to enable changing - first digit will blink.

4 Press the UP or DOWN button to select the letter you want and then press SEL/PRI to move to the next character. Repeat until all eight characters are completed.

5 When finished, press the A button to save the change.

6 Repeat the process for each channel.

7 When finished, press and hold the SCAN button for 2 seconds.

See if this works,
Eric

Sounds like a TK860. Why install an 8 character LCD display if you just show "CH 1"

The Vertex VX-3000 48 / 120 channel radios work great. I have Ver: 4.04 software and the channel tags are easy to program from there. I have never had a problem with this at all.

What I do have a problem with is the radio transmitting below 443.000mhz. Ha anyone else had this problem and is there a fix for this?

Thanks,

Demoh.

Not a Flame
The VX-3000's DO ALPHA/Numeric! At least on the 48/120CH models.

The shop I work for is building a LowBand system and bought about 40 of these last year. They are all 70Watts/120Ch/AlphaNumeric.

Great radios...Better with an external speaker and would be AWSOME if I could get the VCO to lock on 6m.

You are correct, The VX-3000 radios do Alpha tags! My radio didn't have that option. I had the numeric version display only.

Its been a year since I had that radio, I totally forgot. My apologies to all for the misunderstanding.

The Earlier Version of the VX3000 Came out only in Numeric but and then they decided to mak eit availble in Alpha so the one you Porbably have is numeric if you give me model #i can verify for you...

That's a August 97 manufactured radio, I don't think the firmware supports alpha. You could send it to them for a firmware upgrade. 800-263-7839, call em and ask em. Jonathan Pham is the best tech in Support, ask for him.

I support thousands of these things, they're a good little radio if you don't need a selective front end---if you do, you're screwed.
