I've browsed the posts and have a couple of questions re. my install...

How much counterpoise does 6m really need to push against? Will the trunk deck alone do the trick....or should I add straps to the body from the deck? Perhaps forget the deck and just drill into that rear fender????

Am considering the Antrron 6m "hamwhip." Anyone have any experience with this one? Is 7ft (half stinger and half wound fiberglass stick) and looks as if it should develop some gain. Is it broadbanded enough for FM and SSB/CW?....or should I just go with my initial thoughts.....a 54" steel whip (top of a K-40 CB antenna, cut) to a 3/8 x 24 ferrule. Any REAL advantage to going with a thicker 102" CB whip (chopped to resonance) besides remaining vertical at speed?

The trunk deck is the only option I want to explore...therefore my thought of the "gain" antenna...... I'll use a edge type "grip" mount and make sure the screws go into bare metal.....

Is a POS car that I KNOW will die on me if I go through the trouble of getting the headliner down....but I realize center-of-roof would be optimal....

NOW I know where those tall thin whips come from. K40s . . . I'll be hounding the flea market this week. Unless someone has one they want to get rid of. I only need the whip, long enough to cut down for 6m so I can use my NMO mount. I don't want to do the thick whip as described above.

The K-40 I have is fairly thick. It's the same thickness throughout the whole whip. I also have a Wilson 1000 whip. It is the same thickness at the bottom, but tapers to a thin whip towards the top.

The "top" stinger of a K-40 CB whip is available at most CB shops seperate from the base coil for $6-$7. The top stinger of a Wilson 1000 is slightly more expensive and somewhat more flimsy, but may fit your base ferrule where the K-40 does not because of the thickness. Bring your mount to the CB shop to be sure.

I use a 3/8 x 24 thread ferrule (CB shop) (has ONE allen screw and perhaps one INCH to play with tuning,) so, I would cut a little bit at the time and bottom the whip in this type of ferrule, for strength.

WHERE can I get an NMO mount that accepts a stinger like these???????

Well... I just use a commerical 45-54? Comtelco antenna, mounted on a lip mount. Works great. I used it going thru the mountains east of Altoona and it had excellent range and coverage. I cut it for 52 I believe.

Check my reply to 'Low Band Antenna Question'. And yes, if you mount it on the deck lid, bond the lid to the vehicle with wide braided shield.

I use a Larsen model NMO-150 mounted in the center of my trunk lid for both 2-meter & 6-meter operation. Although the NMO-150 is a 5/8 wave 2-meter antenna by design, it works very well on 6-meters too. It's a bit narrow banded on 6-meters though so you probably wouldn't be able to get the full 50-54 MHz range out of it. I use mine strictly for FM so it's works very well from 51.5-54 MHz with no SWR issues.

The NMO-150 is a base-loaded antenna that's less than 50" tall. It produces good results on 6-meters, and isn't as large as some of the comparable antenna's on the market, and is one of the few low-band antenna's that doesn't look like hell on your vehicle. I'm a fan of Larsen anyway, so I tried this one out and found it worked great for both 2 & 6-meter operation. I believe the cost is around $35 for the coil and whip.
