First off, if all you're going to do is tell me "Why don't you just go buy one," don't bother.

I would like to know how to build the programming cable for a vertex VX-10 portable. I got this thing and I just want to experiment with it. If anyone can help me out, I would greatly appreciate it.

thanks!

Unfortunately, it's not just a cable. There is a RIB-like interface that comes housed in the connector.

There was a thread about converting a /\/\ RIB to work with Vertex. You may want to check that out. Otherwise, you need to come up with a bunch of cash. Mine was over $200.00 CDN by the time I got my hands on it.

Judging from the schematic I looked at. I think if you used the Data and ground lines on a RIB with the connector wired for a GP300, I would think it might work. If I get a chance, I'll take a stab at it. I have successfully used the RIB to talk to an Icom F40LT and a T90 in the last week.

did you have any luck with the schematics? would one just wire a stereo mic jack into a plug to hook up to the rib?

Sorry to say I haven't. the limiting factor is not having the 4 conductor connector handy. I thought I had one but apparently not. I do have one of the adms cables so I haven't ever had a real motivation to build one from scratch. The Ham cable, btw, does work fine with the commercial stuff, vx-10, 210, 400, etc. If I do dig the connector up, I'll be sure to give it a try.

well i lucked up on this cable that someone gave me, but i dont know what the deal is, i guess it doesnt work because it wont allow me to read the radio, it just locks up.

go to hamradio.com buy the adms progamming software and cable for the vx-110 radio and now you have the cable, do not use the software though. It's like 30 bucks

Here's a site with schematics for making your own cable. It also shows where to get the 4-conductor 'quadraphonic' plugs if you need one. I'm not sure what the commercial version of this cable costs, but the ham cable is availiable from RT Systems by itself (CT-29D $29) so you don't have to waste money on the software for a ham rig you don't have.
