Steve:

Generally, Saber batteries are available in capacities from 600mAh to about 2,700 mAh, in both NiCD and NiMH. (Steps are usually 600, 1000, 1800, and 2500-2800 mAh.) Smaller capacity means smaller physical size. Both types will charge in the standard Motorola or aftermarket chargers. The NiMH batteries will provide more capacity than a NiCD in the same sized case. Lithium Ion batteries are also available, on a more limited basis, but they require a different charger.

Ask eight people here on the Board whose Saber battery they like best and you're liable to get eight different answers, though you usually won't go wrong with a Motorola. W&W and Multiplier are two other manufacturers. eBay can be a good source for batteries, as well as antennas at times, but you'll always find batteries there.

I have found that sticking with NiCad allows you to use a lot of the legacy equipment coming on the market. Such as charger/conditioners etc. We have a lot of older Sabers floating around the unit and with not much to spend, thats what works for us.

Steve:

I have a few antennas that will work for your application. They are all made in America by Centurion. The first is a standard 6" helical whip for $13.50; model EXB150MX. The second is a 3.5" stubby for $14; model EXS150MX. The third is a 10.5" base loaded whip for $14; model EXH155MX. You can get more on these antennas at http://www.centurion.com.

As for batteries, I have my house brand 1600mAh Ni-CD ones for $35. If you want Multiplier then I have 1100mAh Ni-CD for $51.35, 1800maAh Ni-CD for $52.65, and 2700mAh Ni-CD for $59.25. Other capacities and chemistries are available if you want.

Thanks,
Jeff
