Has anyone actually used these in service? For some reason, I don't see them as a real functional thing. If the mic could be used as a radio mic, maybe (real maybe). Other than that, it just looks like more thing that that can fall to the floor and turn all the lights a sirens on.

I've seen them in unmarked police cars. They also have W3 Astro Spectras, probably so they can just toss the siren control / radio mic under the seat to hide them.

I've used the SVP version with pretty decent results. It's not too big and about the easiest install you'll ever do. Amplifier is decent sounding, and the unit was reliable and covert. It's not Unitrol, but it does the job.

I had to use this a few times! It is a very bad idea...I almost crashed playing with it. I trashed it and installed a siren box and standard 6 switch box from federal signal.

Are you reffering to the older style with the red knob. Have you used the new handheld siren from Signal? I have only seen it advertised in Galls so far but it look like a nice unit for concealment. If you have any opinions on it I'd like to hear them. I'm considering it for an undercover installation in a GTO that will rarely use the siren.

IMO

I've used the SVP Micro Tone too, it is kind of big to have in one hand while driving so I do agree it could be a hazard when driving. I usually kept it mounted on the dashboard and just reached over and flipped the switches. When I wanted the vehicle to be more covert I just took it off the mount and shoved it under the seat. I have seen pictures of the new Federal Signal hand held remote box, it looks small and ergonomically designed so that you could grip it in your hand while driving. The buttons look well placed so that if you did drop it or bang it around you would not inadvertantly turn something on or off. However, I have not had a chance to see one physically. I have not installed one either so I do not how difficult it would be. I have worked on the SVP and can tell you it was a piece of cake. Only needed to find a good solid place to mount the base box which was kind of big. The dimensions of the new Federal Signal seem smaller for both the remote and the main box.

Which of these units would most of you reccommend?
