I am ussing several different radios all of which have a loud squelch tail at the end of the received transmission when the repeater kicks out. It is much louder than the audio level of the conversation. Is this a radio settings that needs adjusting or is this something the repeater is doing? If it is radio related, how is it fixed? If it is repeater related how do I tell the guy who works on the radio what he might do to improve the quality of our service?

By the way, these same radios do not do this on other channels. In both cases these are conventional repeater channels.

If the radios don't do this on other channels, then I would ask "What is different about this channel?"

Are the other channels using CTCSS/DCS/CSQ and this channel is not?

Is the squelch tail possibly coming from the repeater, and not from the radio?

"Reverse Burst" is a function that modifies the last few milliseconds of the PL or DPL tone to force the receiver to squelch before dropping the transmit carrier. To work properly, it will need to be set up in each radio and in the repeater. Given the symptoms you describe, it sounds like this function is not set up properly in the repeater's transmitter or that the receiver is not properly functioning with it.

It is normally a programming parameter in newer radio equipment. And be aware that different manufacturers implemented this slightly differently...so it may be set up and turned on, but just not compatible in this one repeater.

Anyway...that's where I'd start looking. And I think there was a thread on this topic a couple of years ago...

Check on the SEARCH feature.

As Larry said, depending on what type of repeater is used, you might need to set a "Non-Standard Reverse Burst" in the personality on each of the radios.

On the other hand, some repeaters are set up to leave a squelch tail at the end if your input signal doesn't reach a certain threshhold. Kind of a friendly "increase your power" reminder.

Or it may just be a general problem with the repeater.

ANDY - THIS SOUNDS LIKE THE REVERSE-BURST IN THE REPEATER IS NOT PROGRAMMED OR THE REPEATER HAS A THIRD PARTY TONE PANEL CAUSING THE KER-CHUNK. The best squelch tail elimination method is when the tone stops just before the hang timer unkeys,this works well with all brands of equipment.
Might require some mugwumping att the repeater,but works well.

The noise burst may also be an issue with the repater itself having the squelch set too loose. depending on just what the radio is, the squelch setting may or may not effect this problem.

In an older Motorola like a maxtrac and micor, you had the option to and the repeater audio and keying. it may mean checking a couple of board jumpers if this is what model the repeater is.

Most Good repeaters or controllers have the option to select the tail
off or on. We always select off.

Two units like it is the motorola msf5000
and for the gm300 repeater users with the
csi 154+ it can be turned off or on.

There are many out there.

OK. How do I go about turning off the transmit PL using the internal MSF5000 controller? I do not recall seeing an option for that feature. There IS a PL DISABLE input that I could use with an External controller, but I believe the only thing the radio will do is reverse burst with PL.
