Rick,
Each switch works independently; they each have independent power inputs and switched outputs. It's not like most of the switchboxes out there that do power distribution (one input and multiple outputs)
Pin 1 is the voltage for the backlight
pin 17 is the ground for the backlight
Consider all of the 'common' pins as the input to each switch.
The NO and NC pins are the outputs for each switch.
The big thing to keep in mind is that you should not be running devices directly off the wildcard box. Use the switchbox to activate relays that will switch the higher currents required by the lights.
Second that...

I would agree about using relays, and would add a couple of things based on my own install experience.
(1) Use the switches to provide switched grounds, if you can, as opposed to switching a +12 lead.
(2) If you have to switch +12, supply the switch doing the job through a 1 amp fuse or circuit breaker (those switchbox contacts should not be used for anything greater than a 1A load).
(3) No matter if you're switching +12 or ground, apply the source to the normally-open side of the switch, and supply the load through the common side. That makes it easy to change later if you need to.
Happy tweaking.
