Dont maxtracs have regular palm mics on them? Im confused!!!!!

The telephone handset is an option for the maxtrac and the radius M series mobiles. They are a little awkward as the push-to-talk button is on the side of the handset.

Hmm. That is sort of unusual, at that. I can't say for certain if it's actually going to work like that but I wouldn't be surprised. It'd be quite handy for people like, say, detectives who would want to keep their active conversations semi-private if others are in the car with them at the time. While the handset is on its hook, the traffic would be heard via the speaker and it would switch to the handset when you pick up. It makes sense. Pretty smart, actually. But you might want to contact M if you want to verify the validity of this option package. It's not very common, anyway.

The same person was selling Genesis series convertacoms with that option a while back. I saw one functional at a hamfest last year. It didn't appear as if there were any external jumpers or additional hardware added to the convertacom; just 'plug and play.' Pretty slick setup.

They are also available as an option for the CDM series. The handsets have a reed switch and magnet which switches the audio to the handset when it's removed from the cradle. I have some available if you need one. We us them in the backs of our ambulances to be able to hear the medical command orders more clear over any noise in the back. They work pretty good and you get used to the push to talk buttons.

I've seen these setups on e-bay before, and for sale at hamfests. Most of the time I have seen them advertised with Privacy Plus system of some sort.

At the same token, i've seen a handset used for the same thing that FireMedic was talking about, we have two ambulances and when calling the hospital, we use the handset. Both radios are Spectra's though, not Maxtracs. I personally like an actual microphone better. I've also seen this sort of setup used by the MBTA or "T" in Boston. They use it on their subway and busing system. I am pretty sure it's used so that they can hear it more clearly, but also so that if there's something they can't have heard throughout the train or bus, they have the handset for that reason as well...

As well as ambulances, we have installed quite a few in limos as well as executive offices that want privacy. I can say that it is a programmable option in the cdm series. Not too familiar with other types. FatBoy.

but I just recalled that we have quite a bit of them ordered for the airport for most of out customers out there. I dont know if this a way to try to keep sensitive info from fliers or "undesirables". FatBoy

I one I have was made by Motorola to replace the old telephone style handset, the on commonly used in ambulances and such. the latest Motorola part number is AAREX4617. The one I have works ok, its great when you are in noisy environments and need to hear what is being said, it also also you to have private conversations if necessary. So, do these just have a regular RJ45 jack on them where palm mics plug in? Can you just swap the two or does something need to happen in the RSS? Im intrigued!

Normal RJ-45 Jack, will work just like a regular mic but the audio mute feature (speaker audio mute when the handset is out of the cradle) is selected in the RSS as a handset setting. Can't remeber right off hand where in the RSS to change it, but it's in there.

I believe that in radio wide options (or more radio wide options) in the Maxtrac or Radius RSS, you enable handset. It's a yes/no box that you just need to turn on. I'm not sure what happens if you try to use it without turning this option on in the software, it probably just doesn't cut off the speaker.

I've also seen/used these in the EMS setting on the radius M216 and Maxtrac radios, usually remote mounted heads. Works like a charm.

I've used a few of these on GM-300's. If you don't change the handset option in the RSS it just functions like a normal palm mic. The scan stops when you pick it up and resumes when it's hung back up. I'm not sure why they wanted handsets to act like palm mics, but they work just fine.
