So i've been curious as to if it's posible to change the backlighting color on the display.




It's green and that's cool, but i was wondering if i could change it to say a blue color.


Also what's involved in this and what would be needed.

As far as I know, it's never been done. We've established that small SMT-type LEDs (qty. 2) are used. So do a little digging, order the parts, and try it... how do you think the rest of us have come up with lots of our Moto knowledge over the years?

Besides, when you get done, you can brag that you have the only (red/blue/whatever)-backlit AS3 out there. I personally think red backlighting would be bad-ass...

The LCD screen is $255.85 from Motorola and the LEDs are very small.

well for him to post a link saying it's been talked about, yet have no list of items used, that might do it.

Follow the link you'll see he talks about if a display board was cheap enough.

Then someone else talks about small LEDS.


No where did it answer any of my questions or help me out in the slightest.

"What is needed"......hmmm, sure sounds like a walk me thru...it is called...research...no answer, no matter how inane you may find it is worthless...

Maybe you should rethink your comments as I am sure NO ONE, is going to go out of there way to give you the slightest bit of help with that 'tude ya got....

You would expect more from a retired fire guy....too much smoke inhalation maybe??? There are MANY HIGHLY technical folks out here....they DO NOT like to spoon feed....capisce....

First off let me say sorry to everone that i posted to and was offended by my comments.

From what I remember, the SMT leds are 603 size - a very common size available at Mouser.com or digikey.com. Find any LED under 3V, and just solder it place of the old ugly green. The new super-green LEDS look beautiful. Blue is hard to read and focus your eyes in the dark.


All radios from my experience deliver different voltage to the LEDS, they also have different driver ciruits. I recommend obtaining a service manual for any radio your modifying. Not everyone in the group here has a service manual - myself included.

I have changed the LEDS in a VX-5R to blue (keypad & display). That modification required a voltage regulator to be changed as well as the LEDS.

I guess not many people have changed the LEDS in their AS3, why not do it and write up a "how-to"?

Red is nice at night for not killing your night vision.

VX900 by Vertex has an "orange-ey" color, though I'm not certain if they're LED or filament devices. Problem on that radio is that while the alpha display is nice and bright the keypad lighting is so dim it's next to impossible to see except in absolute darkness. With the case removed and battery clipped on it looks like a small Christmas tree as there are probably six or eight lamps on the front of the radio.

This all just for general reference.

I've changed out the orangey colored stuff in yaesu ft-50 series radio for green, with no need to a regulator or resistor change. MUCH more readable. I just dug a green 2 segment LED out of a cell phone, If I remember correctly. I think most of the red/green/orange leds are probably within %10 of each other in terms of voltage, so a green-red swap would probably be fairly easy. White and Blue are usually different voltages, hence the regulator change, or I think removal if memory serves.

Best thing to do is get the service manual, or ( if you're brave, or stupid, or both like me) open the radio and power it up out of the case and check the voltages directly.

A steady hand and small ~30 watt iron would be adviseable.

If they are in fact 0603 size, this would probably work. the voltage is about 2.1v for the green, red is about 1.9v. THis would be my vote, but more careful research about the display board would be advised before buying anything, and the removal of the old LED will be a bit tricky, as mot uses some type of adhesive in their pick and place system.
