I recently purchased an Astro "AVA" for my UHF Astro Saber and want to purchase a Saber SVA for my VHF Saber III. Info that came with the Astro AVA indicated that IT was compatible with Astro Sabers and other Sabers manufactured after a certain date (possibly 1994?). From the serial number, I determined that my (non-Astro) VHF Saber III was manufactured before that date and, accordingly, could not be used in the AVA. QUESTION: Would any (non-Astro) "Saber SVA" I purchase be compatible with my older Saber III or do I need to be concerned with manufacture dates??

It all goes by date codes. My understanding is that the AVA totally replaced the SVA, and the difference between the newer SVA and the AVA is the part number and the accessories, but the unit itself is very nearly the same if not actually identical. The antenna selection pin in the connector assembly of the AVA is spring loaded and should not be affected by putting a Saber into the unit, but be careful anyway. Those pins do break if you're not careful.

The easiest solution is to purchase a new housing for your Saber, and then it WILL be compatible with any AVA.

What they did on that date (September 30, 1994, I think) was they phased in new Saber and Systems Saber housings with new internal flex circuits that changed the universal connector's pinouts to follow that of the Astro Saber, and they stopped producing new
SVA's in the old connection scheme except in replacement parts.
