I am in charge of programming all of my agencies HT1250, HT1000, and Visar radios. How can I change the sound on the recieving end when the PTT-ID comes through. I know that if I change it from MDC1200 to STAR on the HT1000 and visars it changes the sound. I have also heard other agencies when distinct keyups and they all use Motorola software also. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

The sound you hear is intended to transmit a digital ID number that
identifies the individual radio making the transmission. The ID is decoded
in the console and usually displayed so the dispatcher can see whose
radio he or she is hearing. You can't just go and change the ID "sound" unless
you reconfigure the system. If you find the sound annoying at the beginning of
the transmission most systems allow you to have it sent at the end of the
transmission instead, but you have to reprogram each radio to do this.

I might have phrased the question wrong. I have been programming our radios for years and I'm simply just bored with the current chirp that you hear as the recieving squelch burst. I have changed some radios to the STAR programming instead of the MDC1200. That has a distinct sound instead of the common chirp. I have still heard other agencies out there with a more "wild" sounding squelch burst and I want to be able to change it that. I can't describe the sound really.

Well, If you are not using the sound for anytjhing practical
such as it's intended use if id'ng the radio unit,
just turn it off all together ! or am I really missing

First off, let's clear up some terminology, it's not a 'squelch' burst, it's a signaling burst, squelch noise is what you hear when the receiver is unmuted with no signal present.

Ok, next... other than being a latent CB'er, or having watched too many episodes of COPS, why would you want to hear a signaling burst in your transmissions if you aren't actually using the signaling for something useful?

Not a CB'r. I'm just someone that has worked for a police department for way too long and want to be entertained more on my volunteer time. That sound is cool, but it isn't exactly the one that i was thinking of. Now, Is there a way that I can program this in the radios???

Just go into the signalling menu of the RSS for HT1000/JT/VISAR (same software for all 3, so the sig location will be the same as well).

Those Jedi Radios (HT1000/Visar) will do:

DTMF/ANI ID
MDC1200 ID
GE-Star ID

They will not do the Modat sound that you are hearing; either the neighboring department utilizes older MT500's with that option, or more likely are on Saber's, as alot of departments chose those for the ruggedness/reliability.

The HT1250's, as far as I'm concerned, do not do GE-Star, but only MDC and QC formats.

It could be that the department has MDC ID with Preamble enabled, which, sounds just like MDC, but only with a 'ringing' sound to it at the beginning. (Usually this is enabled on pre-key for repeater access reasons)

I think that you just answered all of my questions. It is a ringing type sound in the beginning followed by the usual chirp. I know one of the departments when I did hear this had the big box ht500's. I guess I won't be able to get it again, unless I want to buy a car battery size portable. Thanks!

That sound is possible on the HT1250, HT1000, and Visar.

Just set up MDC on Pre-Key and enable a repeater access code (any one will do as long as you don't care about the actual data it sends) and you're good to go. I was referring to Modat as far as the MT500's, but if it is the ringing sound you want, you already have the radios for it. They just need to be programmed as such.

I programmed radios for Jackson First Aid, everyone wanted the MDC burst, It's cool a few times, but gets really annoying after a while. DTMF is much easier on the ears. I think Freehold First Aid used Kenwood Fleetsync, that's a really cool identifier

Try programming Bit Sync Packets or Preamble, (the ringing sound) this will give a different sounding ID data burst. On HT1000 or HT1250 steting these to 5 in the MDC1200 Options with a pretime of 500ms is usually a pretty good setting.
Just a thought.

And all those entertaining noises drive us nuts here in the next town up Rt 9. Freehold Twp begs you not to get TOO entertaining. I'm sure your volunteers and dispatchers will thank you as well.

...and to think that some people apparently WANT to heard the PTT-ID decoded on the air. I spent the better part of a month trying to match up the decode times with the timing so that we WOULDN'T hear that gawdawful sound on the air...our dispatchers would have lynched us if we left it up there for no good reason.

I make every effort to mute every microsecond of signalling I can in here. I used to think it was cool... for about month. Then it was annoying. DOS muting is a wonderful thing.

The fact that I am a 911 ems/fire/police dispatcher and a volunteer in the same town makes it even more sick that I love hearing the sounds and want to make them more and more readily available : )
