Is it just me or is corporate America (along with much help from our government) doing it's level best to Fedex us into being a third world nation of consumers who will all be standing in line to shop at Wal-Mart to buy substandard made overseas crap because we can't afford anything else and local businesses can't afford to keep the lights on.
I really have a hard time believing "the economy is strong" when gas prices are 3 bucks a gallon, companies like Scumotorola are firing people left and right, and more and more jobs (and benefits) are being given to ILLEGAL ALIENS who will work for slave labor wages.
Oh, I know, I guess if your Ed Zander it's a great economy, or the rest of the 10 top percent of the wage earners, but for the rest of those who bust their butts to make you shine, yes master...it sucks.

When the astute money managers holding millions of shares realize that the core values and competencies that built corporate behemoths have been cut out, fired and sold off, and all that is left are superficial shells, with speech-recognition autoattendants answering the phones, well, just watch that share value accelerate........ off a cliff.
One of the corporate leaders I kind of admired was Jack Welch, former CEO of GE. Jack sold business segments that GE wasn't first or second in. One exception, though, was mobile radio. But, then again, maybe that was before his time. I do seem to remember MR was a close second to /\/\. At least he had the good sense to not just sell off assets, but to acquire them as well. To ensure that GE would remain either first or second in every business category it owned.
So, compare that to /\/\. Sold off RF semis (a national security issue). Sold off microprocessors. Sold off automotive. Did I miss one or two? Did they sell off mobile radio, too? If they do that, what's left besides Shell Phones? Maybe WiFi modems and Shell Phones. Maybe they can change their name to Phonorola or WiFiorola if there's no more 'MO' in the name.

There can't be much left..they sold cell phones, no more pagers, the Iridium flop, service/repair sold and leaving the country, parts NLA, they never wrote any good software..at least I haven't come across any yet..including business on-line.
There isn't much left except trunking/Nextel and that's a short term venture.
Maybe they should just pull the hook completely which would keep everyone from being constantly aggravated.

Nobody wants to carry big radios with heavy battery packs.
FRS are tolerated because they are small, light, and cheap.
They are putting a city wide WiFi starting in the downtown.
With the stability and reliablity of the digital systems, conventional radio is on the way out quick.
My heavy XTS does secure, but probably not real secure for very much longer. It seems a bit of a one trick pony, and few are as impressed anymore.
Sell off mobile radio? For them yes, for me, I can squeeze another year or two yet. But I am going to start reducing.

Then becoming a Corporate Leader as a true "World Class Sell-U-Ler Independent Financial Company" without any marketable products or services just managing their M-O-N-E-Y. This is generally known as a Wall Street Financial Stock Broker.
Under Christopher Galvin's rein, MOTOROLA, INC stock went up to $185.00 Per Share in 2000 and a 3 to 1 Split was declared. By the time the Split took place, the stock was rapidly sliding downward to $120.00 Per Share. After the Split the Stock Prices continued to accelerate downward to less than the asset value of the company!
The Wall Street Broker Houses didn't trust Christopher Galvin as far as they could throw him. Earlier in the Spring of 2001 the Big Broker Houses could tell that /\/\ was losing M-O-N-E-Y hand over fist and had a conference call with Chris Galvin and then Bob Growney. The temptation for CEOs to make themselves rich at the expense of the entity they lead is flat out embezzlement of the worst kind. Not only do they steal assets, they cripple what's left so that it cannot continue to grow and prosper.
However, the selling-off necessary intellectual property that is part of systems we depend upon for our critical/strategic/military systems is worse, from a long term perspective. And, the use of critical technology of foreign design imbedded in national security (or even the local PD) systems is extremely poor judgement. And, could provide vulnerabilities that may cost us dearly at some point in the future. Well beyond the value of some corporate assets.
Think about it. Encryption keys and systems, in the hands of whomever. Unavailability (on purpose) of RF semiconductors following use of tactical EMP sources. Or, flat out redirection of the key subsystems into units to be used by our opponents.
While we weren't looking, somebody sold out America. Who was in charge when that happened?

Exactly how backwards is using vacuum tubes?
When our U.S. Military were sent over to the Middle East for Desert Storm under the first President Bush, their solid state radio receiving equipment was being damaged (permenantly damaging the transistor GaasFet technology front ends) just from the Static build up from the sandy terrain in Kuwait & Iraq. Through the Military channels they were searching for used Collins KWM-2 H.F. Transceivers that were designed back in 1958 the hey day of vacuum tube equipment.
The so-called obsolete vacuum tubes can with stand this type of abuse and keep on working. Many hams have purchased the older Collins S Line because of the design and durability over time. Collins trademark was dropping a transceiver off a six foot ladder, then pick it up, plug it into primary power and the unit would turn on and operate to factory specs. And this was using (Glass) vacuum tube equipment!
Did you accidently drop your /\/\ handheld portable transceiver and have the LCD crack? Deem the handheld worthless in an emergency or drop a Quantar Base Station six feet while trying to man-handle the unit up a flight of stairs to a penthouse. Get ready to take it back to the shop for mechanical repairs before even checking the electrical specs.

That was my point Dan, though I was referring more to EMP survivability since that's where the thread was going. Most folks not in the know however would view the Russians and Chinese as backwards for using such "old" technology.

Hate to spoil the tube party, but I pulled out my Harris RF-590/590A manual, and it is <i>loaded</i> with passive RF and DC overvoltage protection in its front end, before any solid state RF junctions are encountered. So, properly designed gear is immune from static build-up and even EMP. So, just what kind of gear was this that failed? Certainly, our military has and had <i>plenty</i> of Harris RF-series equipment. It wasn't any of that, for certainty.
Perhaps it was something closer to home. PRC gear designed and built by ????? Probably someone we know, all too well. Probably designed and at least partially built in China or Mexico or Israel.
