MTX8000 B3 to B7?
Is there a way to upgrade a MTX8000 B3 model to a B7 model? I'm sure it's not as simple as installing a new front cover> Suggestions?
In GOD we trust; all others we run NCIC
No, sadly, it's not.
Most B3 MTX8000 controlers will only take up to a B4 top display. If your lucky and have a super late model controler, you might be able to goto a B7, but I hear they are kinda rare. MTX8000's can also be upgraded to MTS2000's, but you only get the features of which your radio is actually capable of.
So, in short, it'll be a long shot if it's even possible. The most you'll get is a B4.

Yes it is. I won an MTX8000 "B7" radio just to take off the battery any have it say 'B3'. You better believe I was disappointed about that. The front display worked as intended, however there were some other flaws in it, so I had to send it back.
The seller said that he changed one of the boards inside (the one closest to the bottom) to allow it to accept the full display. I don't know if it also made the radio 160 modes, though.

Then you lucked out. Like was already stated, some if not alot of B3's have the older controllers in them that were written to only be a B3.
And like what was already explained privately, it's cheaper to burn a bunch of boards all the same and just disable the options that the intended radio isn't suposed to have than it is to burn 3 different versions of the same physical board.
Just because it worked for you doesn't mean that someone else will luck out and buy the right version of B3 radio.
Anyone happen to know at what version the B3's started having this capability? I know the "youngest" B7 I've owned was a 1.37 and I've seen B3's with 1.37.
