General Warning --- MT2000/MTS2000/MTX8000/MTX9000 Series

Post by alex »

As of recent, I have talked to a number of people - some of which have sent me PM's, IM's, etc. that have purchased one of the above radios from someone who has claimed that these radios are what they are told they are.

Mostly, It seems there has been a surge of hacked portables. MTX8000's are pretty cheap, and easy to hack into MT/MTS portables - but features that are enabled will not work, programming them in RSS causes the radio to show fail codes, or causes the radio to not complete self check.

When purchasing these portables check for several things:

Have the person you are buying it from press the button directly above the PTT during turn on 5-7 times, until they get the word SERVICE. Have them copy down the information, and compare it to what's on the back of the radio. It should match. If it doesn't I would stay away, unless the seller is able to tell you that every feature as programmed will work, or you'll get your money back plus shipping. In most cases, the'll prob. break off communication, and look for some other sucker.

There seems to be a number of people on ebay doing this, and it's not a good practice. I understand why - a good MTS2000 flashed with a nice flash etc would go for $500-$700, while a cheapo MTX8000 will sell for only $100-$200 if your lucky. I'm sure you follow the logic.

So keep in mind who you are buying from, make sure they are upfront and honest about what they are selling you before buying. Taking the extra day or two to make sure that you get what you want is worth it not to get scammed out of your money.

Good Shopping!

How can you do this with a top display type MTS2000? Is there still a way to read the flashcode? I casually tried the turn on and push method you described and got nothing but the regular turn on cycle.

My RSS computer took a dive and I'm w/o programing for a little while.

Tks,

Anybody have a part # for an MTX8000 controller? Just trying to figure out if that is what happened to me.

The same method works for the top display MTS2000 radios as well. Simply wait for the radio to wake up normally, then push the bottom small button 5 times. The model#, serial# & flashcode will scroll across the screen.

ONE of the MTX8000 controllers is the NTN7620E and probably could include the NTN7620x as a family. It has changed several times. I used to have a list of all the part numbers that the MTX controller went through. Anyways, a TRUE MTS2000 controller would have a socket on the face side of the board for a encryption module.

As for checking the model number and serial number, you can use lab rss to change this info. And it shows the programmed model/serial number when entering test mode. The flashcode on MTS2000's does not always display. I believe the only time the flashcode is displayed is if the radio has been flashed since the original burn from the factory. If you have a MTS2000 and the flashcode does not display, then it is listed on the mn/sn placard on the bottom in fine print.

Not always true, I have a "real" MTS2000 purchased directly from ma-M, flashcode is 00004-00006 (smarnet only)- it comes up when the test mode is entered...says "Jedi 6.01" than flashes model no, serial no and flash code. The flash code is also on the rear label- it is the ORIGINAL flashcode from the factory- never been touched by anyone other than a local MSS who programmed it with CPS on our system.

I think the main point here is KNOW WHO YOU ARE BUYING FROM. If they are repuatable they will tell you they have a hacked MTX8000- and not misrepresent it as something it isn't. If it is a REAL MTS, it will have a model/sn sticker on the rear and will match what is inside, a REAL MTS controller with a socket for an encryption board, and an RF switch installed on the RF board (most MTX8000's do NOT have the RF switch- guess they wanted to save $$$ and figure civilian users don't use public safety mikes). I would NEVER buy one without seeing it first, or only if I knew the seller.

Ok, well here is one for you...

I have an MT2000 255 channel radio, with a controller model # NTN7512B. It does not have a place to plug in an encryption module. Any ideas if this is a for real controller, or something hacked?
