Is there anything wrong with mounting the remote transceivers of either the Spectra or Syntor on their sides?

Not that I can think of.

Except maybe in the Spectra the caps will leak in a different direction ;)

I've mounted them on either side and upside down. I've put them under seats, on the firewall, behind the passenger seats on the rear wall, and up in the overhead dash. I believe it really all depends on the best place you can find so that the radio is out of sight but the connections are easy to get to if needed.

I have been mounting high power units on either side of the trunk on their sides for many years with no issues.

Just don't place them where they dont have enough air around them
for proper cooling. :( Phrawg
