I just bought a uhf hi-power spectra off ebay, it works great other than one thing. It is always in monitor mode, or off-pl. Even when I hit "0" - It does display "Monitor On" , "Monitor Off" as I choose, but it still stays in monitor mode even when in monitor off. I am certain that all the PL's are programmed for recieve as well as TX b/c I did it myself. Maybe something to do with the MPL option, (which isn't enabled) But what?

Quick check: check with a voltmeter on the hang-up stud, back of mic, for aprox 4 to 5 volts. That will confirm that the off-hook "monitor" circuit is connected thru to the mic. Some times just a loose connection in the mic or mic plug.
Also there have been broken solder joints on the mic jack in the head, or delibertly disabled by open circuit in the mic.

well, here's the scoop. I hooked up a different mic, and that fixed the problem. Thing is, it's not my mic, and not the heavy-duty type. I also tried using 2 different mic-clips on the mic that I want to use, but it still stayed open. I don't have a voltmeter to actually test it, but what do you think the problem is, a pin busted on the mic? All pins look o.k. to me, but maybe I'm missing something?

Or maybe the wire inside the mic connected to the hangup button isn't connected anymore. If someone heavyhanded took the mic apart without regard to that, it would break upon the back of the mic being yanked off.

I forgot to mention this before, the mic is actually new. I opened the mic, and the wire was connected a.o.k. - But here's something odd....in that other mic that I tried that worked, the wire was disconnected. So I did the same with my new mic, but to no avail. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Simple thing, is your mic clip grounded?


What is the model number of the mic that worked and what is the model number of the one that won't?

WHOOPS!! Thanks Jason. I had it grounded into a metal screw, however, that screwed into ceramic, so of course, the ground is rendered USELESS. I moved it over and everything works fine. fewwww - Thanks for your help guys, even for such a minute problem.

I guess that we figured the hangup clip was grounded, at least I did.
Some mics have a ground ring arround the hang-up stud and do not have to be grounded, but are not usally the standerd Spectra mic.
The reason the Spectra mic is needing to be grounded is so the operator will not be able to put a nickle in the hang-up box like in the Motrac thru Micor days!!!
