Jesus Christ!
How much of the taxpayers' money are they spending on all this? (And how long before I can get an XTS4000...on ebay?)

Probably not for a while - it's not widely used except for the coasts it seems.
I've had a chance to play with a few of the VHF Units - they're actually built better than a NexTel IMO, and the range is OK.

Now, it's basicly an XTS5K but in a covert case?
Any one know a cost for the VHF and the options that would be avail for one?

That's correct, and with a pathetically inefficient antenna for VHF, so don't expect it to perform nearly as well as an XTS5000 with wideband whip.
The UHF version should do pretty well though, and if they release an 800MHz version, it'll likely be fantastic.

The target "audience" is the fed users, which offically don't have any allocation in 800...but then again, the fedz can take over the any spectrum if they wanted to

Sadly, there will probably never be a S-Split for the reasons above... no real fed allocation... Maybe NYPD will :o until they make one?

It will be interesting to see if requests from large public safety customers push M into offering the product in more bands.

If a low split UHF XTS4000 were available for general purchase, I'd buy one new in a heartbeat.

Can I push a XTS4000 cp into a XTS5000 and get the vibra alert?

Shoving a codeplug into the radio doesn't make a vibrator motor magically appear inside the case...
