Amplifier Question

Post by rileym »

Can a commercial sound amplifier be used to amplify RF as well?

I have a 2500 watt commercial amp that i have always wondered about the possibly of modifying to allow such use.

The experienced people can chime in but I'd say no. RF amplifiers are tuned to a specific frequency range and have components set to make it work in that range so that the signal gets amplified and also presents the correct impedance to the transmitter output (50 ohms usually). You probably could use the audio/sound amp for the speaker output if the impedances are right but 2500 watts is a lot of audio. That amp is meant to amplify audio frequencies - not say HF/VHF/UHF frequencies.

If the lights are out when you leave the station and then come on the second you key up, you know you have enough power.

The answer of no was correct. No dual use without serious reconstruction. The amps audio transformers and tubes and a lot more would have to be converted to a RF amplifier type coils and transformers. . The poweer supply could be used to power a RF amp that you could build or buy. lol
