I have a vhf-MTS2000. The last number in the flashcode sticker after a long series of zeros is "9". What does this signify?

That would be the flashcode for the radio. There are some utilities on the internet that will decode what that means. I believe that all zeros with a 9 at the end is conventional operation only.

If you are asking about the "9"...

The final digit in a flashcode is the checksum digit. Flashcodes are made up of 13 digits, counted from twelve (left-most) down to one (next-to-last on the right). Digit zero (the last one on the right...your "9") is the only digit that does not signify what software/hardware options are in the radio. Checksum is what we computer weenies use as an error-detection counter to make sure that a data stream (the 12 flashcode numbers, in this case) does not contain errors. It's a check of the sum (thus the word "checksum") of the hexidecimal flashcode digits 1 thru 12 represented in decimal format. If this error detection method "adds up", it is assumed that your flashcode is valid. In simpler terms, it's like reconciling your checkbook with your bank statement each month. Again, it is the only digit in your flashcode which has no meaning as it pertains to what is in your radio.
