Yes, you use the MTSX software to program this series of radios.

The latest version that will program this series is R06.05.00 and is a dos version. I am almost positive the CPS will not program these radios.

The radios for the most part are rather simple, however, they are rather hackable. Playing with lab software accomplishes some of these hacks, however you'll end up making bricks faster than working radios if you don't have a clue as to what you are doing (something to keep in mind!).

You can do just about anything with the RSS without harming the radio as there are "safetys" in place. However, with LAB it automaticly assums you know what you are doing, no questions asked. It'll let you do whatever you want.

I would make backups of your codeplugs on floppies, and store them in a safe place.

MTX8000/9000's as well as MT2000's are not subject to toolproofing, so that is not a concern.

Good Luck Playing!

Yes, MTSX RSS will program MTX8000's. What is the model number of the radios? Most non-keypad models, (ie, H01UCC6DB3AN's) are type I and conventional only, though if you have lab RSS you can put type II personalities in them. If they are B7 or B7 models, they will do type II with no problems. they don't have the toolproofing issues as with MTS2000's, but I would STRONGLY recommend reading the MTSX pages here on Batlabs about backing up your codeplug if you plan to play around with LAB RSS!

Most MTX8000's don't have the RF switches installed from the factory, so the remote antenna option on a public safety mike won't work, nor will a JVA antenna connection. Apparently, the RF switch was an option.

Because they were not intended to be public safety radios, MTX8000s will not program for the 867 and 868 conventional channels that are exclusively for public safety use -- at least without hacking (which I've never tried). Interestingly enough, though, if the system you're programming has 867 or 868 channels in its array of voice channels, the MTX8000 will switch to them in response to an OSW.

For the same reason, MTX8000 radios will not (at least in my experience) scan trunked systems with priority.
