sm120 : 25watt to 40watt?

Is the PA in a 25watt sm120 the same as a 40 watt sm120? If so, can it be modified to a 40 watt model by Hexediting the model number in the codeplug and then recalculating the Checksum. Motorola could not have made it this easy could they?

No, they didn't. Among other differences, the 2 pre-drivers & final transistor in the power amplifier circuit are not the same. You may get 40 watts out of the unit with your method, but not for long.
