"Plantation PQE" Label

Greetings,

I have a friend that purchased a radio on eBay. It has this sticker on it. I then just saw another radio that was purchased on eBay that has a similar sticker. I have heard a number of rumors that this means the radio is an engineering and was not supposed to be sold. I was just wondering if anyone here can confirm what this means.

Thanks,
Matt

What radio? Model?

Some hand held portables were made in Plantation Fl. Motorola had a plant there and Engineering facilities.

It is an XTS 5000, model H18KEH9PW7AN. Where there would usually be the black and green "FM approved" label, there is a small sticker (about 2/3's the size of the normal stickers) centered. It says "Plantation PQE" has a barcode in the center, and on the bottom has the M logo and "Intelligence Everywhere". It was clearly made with a thermal printer. I don't have a picture of it at the moment, but I could take one in a few hours when I get home.

Also, when the moderator reads this, any chance I could get moved to the normal users groups? I'm not really sure where I'm supposed to make that request...

Thanks,
Matt

On the ser# of a "M" radio looking at the 3 letters in the middle, if the 1st letter is "A" that radio was made in Plantation. [Ft. Lauderdale] "C" means Shaumberg. [Chicago] Over the years I knew lots of tech's & engineers who worked there, & their radios seemed to have regular tags. I lived many years 3 miles east of the plant. GARY N4KVE

First letter of the serial number is a C (CDQ).

Label says:

Plantation PQE
ALT Lot # 00721XTSVD
<BARCODE>
3703051914
intelligence M everywhere

Interesting, I have a JT1000 VHF made in 2003 that has a S/N who's letters are CCJ, yet the tag says MADE BY MOTOROLA IN MALAYSIA.

And I just pulled out a couple of MTX 838's & they are made in Malaysia, & they say 511TAC00xx. Eric, was the ser# decal black or white? One of my friends who worked at the plant near me was given a bunch of VHF, & UHF MTX radios with components, & instructions to turn them into JT1000's. This was before they had their own separate controller board. After the components were replaced, & the radios were tested, he replaced the ser# sticker to show it was now a JT1000. Maybe your radio had a similar start, being built in Malasia, & converted in the US. I remember seeing very early pre production MTS2000 radios that the employees carried. They had gold 50th anniversary decals. The ABC switch was longer than the production ones, & the controller board was not a flashport design with the 2 chips. It was a single chip MTX type controller. Very low 1. something fw, not upgradable. But yet a normal MTS2000 serial tag. A couple of my friends built the MX that was taken into space on the space shuttle. Saw lots of neat stuff back then. GARY N4KVE

Just a guess, may of gotten serviced in Schaumburg with something necessitating a new label and ser# was grabbed from ESN and printed out on a depot label ?

the label is black, shiny black- which is like the Schaumberg radios, but it says Made In Malaysia by Motorola. It was an Ebay find, surplus from Phoenix, AZ.

Just like a Chinese AK47, there are no firm rules & always an exception. The Malaysia serial tags I've seen were white. Like a depot tag. At least mine are. It appears the OP has a radio that was used by the factory. But from his description it seems to have a regular ser# tag. Certainly not a 123ABC radio. GARY N4KVE

The poster said it says "ALT Lot#". That sounds a heck of a lot like it was an Accelerated Life Test radio.

A friend bought an XTS2500 that was an ex-ALT radio as well. You'd likely never know, however I wouldn't use it for anything above an Amateur/Hobby capacity.
