START SITE CONTROLLER - Questions...

Post by kj4bnd »

So i am still looking at creating a single site trunking system for the city i work for. I have a good lead on a fairly turn key start site system with quantar repeaters.. Just need cables and antenna.

My big question before i go to my boss is this.. According to "M" rebanding for this controller is just a reprogram. Be it that i have just heard of the start site controller i've never heard of CPS for one. Does anyone have a part number?

I know i can only have 5 channels on it..

Some other questions:
How does a system admin control this system? (Add remove talk groups / radio id's) Does one need to be at the controller site? or can it administered remotely? Via terminal console or is it thru CPS?
How many radio id's can it support?
How many talk groups. ( I understand the channel limitations of 5 repeaters)
What are its features?
I assume that a hard wired CEB/Console is out of the question....

Any help is appreciated.. Thanks
John

John:
The Start Site controller has a code plug U48. All of the system information is in this code plug.
Any change such as call sign, channel frequency is in the code plug.

The controller can be managed over a dial up modem, or a local terminal.

Hi:
I do not want to discuss this in an open forum. This RSS is NOT supposed to be in the USA. It is on one 1.44 floppy, runs on DOS.
Motorola originally programmed the code plugs with an ancient HP computer.
This programmer crashed in the early '90s, no one was left that knew the HP operating system, so all code plugs had to be done on the newer system. That is why the early boards became obsolete,(Aside from features) Schaumburg could no longer program on the old system. If one needed a new U48 the CSC,RSC,TSC,MCB had to be replaced at the user's expense. No big deal if the system was a MOSMR (Motorola owned Specialized Mobile Radio System)
When the newer versions of the control boards were developed a "field" programmer was also developed to compliment the "SAFP"
(Stand Alone Field Programmer) for programing subscriber units with out the key from TCMS.(Trunking Code Plug Management System) Typically used over seas.
Mostar, Syntor,STX. The programmer is designed for use with a Data I/O 29B programmer.
This "field Programmer" was intended for use in foreign countries.
The Data I/O is used for the 27C256 chips, the Start Site 28256 can be programmed in the controller its self.
Even though a 28256 can be installed in the CSC, it cannot be programmed in the Smart Net controller.
It is possible to use the .bin file from the field programmer to write to the chip, but there are several additional steps such as setting the start address in the chip. The file cannot be used in a garden variety programmer.
Then there is the write protect feature for the 28256. If the write protect is not set the chip may become corrupted.

In the last century I was the Customer Service Engineer for Motorola International Area KW. I have been working on trunking since the beta test days.I have worked on most of the Motorola trunking systems in the Western Pacific at one time or another. Also had a spare controller to test and repair boards. If we had an MA the boards went to HI tech, otherwise I repaired them. I also did all the field mods on the duplex passport boards. Also the test equipment depot, and I also built sites, debugged systems and sites done by competitors. (GE,EFJ)
I "retired" in '95, after 24 years. Entirely by chance I obtained the field programer, as well as the Data I/O after I was retired.
I can program the U48 as well as print the "birth certificate" I became very involved in the re banding projects here and in Asia.
