Was just wondering if I can operate In Astro (IMBE) Mode (UHF) on a conventional repeater?
I remember seeing a post here sometime ago about this topic
I think It needs to be an 'open' (non PL) repeater ?
Any information on this topic, ideas/comments appreciated
Thanks !

As long as the repeater doen't require a PL, you should be all set. Same goes with DVP etc.

Wait a second. It shouldn't work. The ASTRO signal is a 4 level FSK signal. How could a 4-Level FSK signal that is detected by a FM receiver and then re-transmitted as FM (not FSK) be decoded by a receiver looking for FSK?. I don't see how it could work.
I am using the words "shouldn't" and "could" instant of "won't" because I've seen some strnage things in electronics over the years.
Never say never.

Yeah, I've been under the impression that you need a data-compatible repeater to repeat IMBE or Securenet, etc...

Unfortunatley your right only a ASTRO signal is a 4 level FSK signal can be detected by a ASTRO signal is a 4 level FSK signal repeater and hence can only be used in conjunction with each other....the other problem will need a data-compatible repeater to repeat IMBE or Securenet ids and changing encryption keys

The references I've seen in Motorola manuals say only Quantars can be used for ASTRO, though the manuals are many years old. I'm sure any APCO-25 repeater should work. It would prove difficult to make a non-digital repeater ASTRO compatiple.
